1520 Arts In The Community | Feb

– February 2020 –

2020 is zooming by. Can you believe it’s already March?!  February was a fun month for us.  During the month we had the chance to visit some new places and make new friends and we even had a chance to be on TV!

This is Utah!

For the 2nd half of 2019, PBS’s “This Is Utah” followed us around and documented some of the things we’re involved with. They came to after school programs, The HERC, The Utah Arts Festival and They Reminisce.  During our time together we got to talk about what 1520 Arts does, but we also discussed Hip Hop culture.  We talked about it’s origins and also the history of Hip Hop here in Utah.  It was really cool to see so much old footage in the final piece.  We also loved seeing how much of our scene was represented in the final video.  If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, here ya go!

Midvale Middle School

During February we had the chance to visit Midvale Middle School and spend some time with the students there.  Over the course of two lunches we talked to students about Hip Hop’s history and the different elements that go in to a Breakin’ round.  We also talked about what it means to be in individual and to create something unique to you.  Individual expression is important in Breakin’ and you have to be confident in the style you create.  As the students finished eating we had a few minutes to learn some basics.  It’s always really fun to see a lot of the students come out of their shells and try something new.

Teaching & More Teaching!

Often times when we go somewhere we aren’t allowed to take pics of the students…but more often than not we just forget to take pictures lol!  We’re trying to be better at it, but you know.  Over the last couple months we’ve had the opportunity to perform for Jeds Barbershop which is always a fun experience.  Jed and his staff are so supportive of what we do and we love when we get the chance to work with them.  We also taught at the YMCA in Taylorsville and performed for the Civic Event Coordinators in Bluffdale.  March is shaping up to be a crazy month as well so be on the look our for where we’ll be next!
