ERA 1: THE ORIGIN
They Reminisce is just around the corner, so we thought it would be nice to introduce you to some of the talented people who made the show possible. Our goal was to utilize some of the best talent Utah had to offer. We wanted the choreographers and the dancers to try something new and push the limits of things they’ve done in the past.
[blockquote align=”center”]They Reminisce is split into 3 Eras that cover 3 important times in Hip Hop’s history.[/blockquote]Era 1 is the “Origin Era“, the birth and beginning of Hip Hop. The DJ (DJ Scratchmo) would provide the sound of Hip Hop. The Bboy (Max Crebs) would provide the dance of Hip Hop. Graffiti (I wish we could have done this, but the theater decided no) would be the image of Hip Hop. And finally, the MC (Atheist) would be the voice of Hip Hop [divider]
THE DJ
Gabriel Ghent (DJ Skratchmo)
[blockquote align=”left”]It’s very exciting to be a part of something that covers a history many people don’t know a lot about[/blockquote] Gabe Ghent (DJ SkratchMo) was born in Manhattan Beach, California and spent most of his childhood growing up there as well as in Utah. Music, especially Hip Hop music and culture, has always been a central part of his life. His discerning eye for great music and skill on the decks comes from his years of traditional musical training, and his 15 years of experience in the local Hip Hop community has helped him understand the full spectrum of urban dance and musical styles, and how they all fit within the big picture of American art and music.Originally a bboy, Gabe was turned on to DJ’ing after observing that many DJ techniques use the same musical principles as playing percussion. The name he adopted as his DJ moniker, SkratchMo, is a play on words. “Satchmo” is taken from the nickname of jazz musician Louis Armstrong, and the “scratch” is a DJ technique used extensively in the “turntablist” style he employs. This name also evokes his overall approach to DJ’ing and music.[blockquote align=”right”]Everyone knows how Hip Hop looks and sounds today, but not everyone knows where it came from. And having that knowledge is so important.[/blockquote] In addition to The Crate Dwellers, DJ SkratchMo is a strong supporter of the Utah Hip Hop scene. He has helped put on events for the Bboy Federation and United We Dance, and is the resident DJ for rap crew, House of Lewis. As he sees it, the DJ is the keystone in Hip Hop, and his goal is to always be a support for the scene as best he can.

THE BBOY
Max Crebs (Bboy Baby Blue)
My name is Max Crebs and I was born in Salt Lake City Utah. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah and graduated in May of 2013. I started dancing, specifically breaking, in 2004 when I was 16 years old.
[blockquote align=”left”]After I went to my first Battle at Uprok in downtown Salt Lake City, I saw how incredibly challenging and how interesting the culture was and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. [/blockquote] In the almost 8 years that I’ve been dancing, I have performed in shows such as EVE Salt Lake, performed and taught workshops at the Utah Arts Festival, and have traveled and competed in cities such as New York, Las Vegas, Orlando, and Los Angeles.My main focus in my dance career is to continue to travel and compete as much as I can, as well as continue to inspire and train younger generations of Bboys. I’m excited to have been invited to perform in They Reminisce because it gives me another opportunity to try something different as well as expand my knowledge and experience about dancing, and it will also give the audience a different perspective about Breaking than what they are used to.[divider]
THE MC
Scott Knopf (MC Atheist)
“I went to film school in San Francisco and got my Master’s degree.
I’ve rapped at almost every major venue in Salt Lake City on shows with legendary performers such as The Pharcyde, Talib Kweli, Mobb Deep, Blueprint, and Binary Star.
I’ve been listening to hip-hop since I was a kid. There were three radio stations in my town, one in Spanish, one that only played country, and one that played rap. It was an easy choice. In 10th grade, my English teacher gave me a Pharcyde CD and my love for underground hip-hop began there. I started making my own music in 2012. Three projects later, I’m working on a new album that will be released on August 8th, 2014.
I’d like to license my music to TV shows and movies. That’s the big goal for the next year.
I work in marketing, watch a lot of movies, visit my friends back home as much as possible.
I couldn’t be more excited for this show. First of all, Rose Wagner is an incredible venue. And the B-Boy Fed always puts on dynamic and innovative events so something at this level won’t let anyone down. This will be one of the coolest shows of the year.”
